It depends on your needs, and we’ll confirm the length when you book. A full examination takes longer than a quick check, so please don’t rush it.

First Dental Appointment in Oxford: A New Patient Guide
Booking a new dentist in Oxford? Our new patient guide explains how to register, what to bring, what happens at your first check-up and how NHS and private care work at Summertown Dental & Implants.
📍 279 Banbury Road, Summertown, Oxford | 🦷 New Patients Welcome | 📞 01865 558822
Starting with a new dentist can feel like a bigger step than it should. Maybe you’ve just moved to Oxford, your old practice has closed its books, or it’s been a while since your last check-up and you’re not sure what to expect. All of these are normal reasons to look for a new dentist, and nobody at the practice will be judging you for it.
This guide walks through your first appointment at Summertown Dental & Implants, from how to book and what to bring to what happens in the chair and afterwards, so you know exactly what to expect.
Short answer: Your first appointment is a full dental examination. We’ll talk through your health and any concerns, check your teeth, gums and mouth, take X-rays only if they’re clinically necessary, and explain what we’ve found and what, if anything, you need. You leave with a clear plan.
How Do I Register as a New Patient?
The simplest way is to call us on 01865 558822 or use the contact form on our contact page. Tell us:
- Whether you’re interested in NHS or private care (see below)
- If you have any pain or an urgent problem, so we can look at it sooner
- Whether you feel nervous about dental visits, so we can plan around it
We’re open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
NHS or Private: Which Is Right for Me?
Many new patients ask this first, and you don’t have to have it all worked out before you call.
NHS treatment. We offer NHS dental care to patients who qualify. NHS care covers the treatment needed to keep your mouth healthy, including examinations, X-rays, fillings, root canal work, extractions, crowns, bridges and dentures, charged under the NHS’s three standard bands, plus a separate charge for emergency treatment. NHS charges are set nationally and change each April, so please ask us for the current fees. You can read more on our NHS treatment page. Please ask when you call whether we currently have NHS places available.
Private treatment. Private dentistry covers cosmetic and elective options that sit outside the NHS, such as teeth whitening, composite bonding, veneers, Invisalign, dental implants and hygiene appointments. Our fees page lists private prices, and we’ll confirm costs with you before any treatment starts. Our blog explains how an NHS dentist in Oxford can also offer high-quality private and cosmetic dentistry.
If you’re not sure, say so when you call. We’ll help you work out which fits what you need.
What Should I Bring?
- Your medical history. Medical conditions, allergies, and any medication you take, including over-the-counter and herbal products
- Any previous dental records or X-rays, if you have them, though it’s fine if you don’t
- A note of your concerns, such as sensitivity, bleeding gums, a broken filling or something about your smile
- Evidence of NHS exemption, if you’re claiming free NHS treatment
- A way to pay, if you’re having private treatment
Arrive a few minutes early to complete forms. We have two off-street spaces in front of the practice, and street parking nearby. If you’re coming from the A40 side of North Oxford, the practice is easy to reach.
What Happens at Your First Appointment?
Here’s the typical order of things:
1. A friendly chat.
We’ll ask about your medical history, your dental history, your habits (such as smoking or grinding your teeth) and anything that’s worrying you.
2. A full examination.
We check your teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks and the soft tissues of your mouth.
3. Gum health check.
We look at the health of your gums, as gum problems are one of the most common reasons adults lose teeth. Bleeding gums are worth mentioning, as they’re easy to treat early. See our guide on why you should never ignore bleeding gums.
4. Mouth cancer screening.
This is a routine part of a dental examination. It’s quick and painless.
5. Bite and jaw check.
We look at how your teeth meet when you bite and assess your jaw joints (TMJ).
6. X-rays, only if needed.
We only take X-rays when they’re clinically necessary, for example to check between teeth, look at bone levels or investigate a problem.
7. The explanation.
We tell you what we’ve found in plain language, what needs attention and what doesn’t, and what your options are.
You’re welcome to ask questions throughout, and nothing should be done without you understanding it first.
I’m Nervous. Will That Be a Problem?
Not at all. Dental anxiety is very common, and plenty of our patients haven’t seen a dentist for years because of it. Just tell us when you book, and we’ll go at your pace. Our guide to dental anxiety and how sedation can help explains the options, and sedation is available for suitable patients.
What If I Haven’t Been to a Dentist in Years?
You’re not alone, and it’s never too late to start again. We won’t lecture you. A first examination is about finding out where things stand and making a plan, in manageable steps, that suits you.
What Happens After the Appointment?
- If you need treatment, we’ll explain it, what it involves and what it costs, and agree a plan with you.
- If everything looks healthy, you simply carry on, with a recall appointment. Dental examinations are generally recommended every six months, though we may suggest a different interval based on your oral health, age and risk factors.
- If you’d benefit from a hygiene visit, we’ll let you know. See our hygiene appointments page.
- If you’re interested in improving your smile, we can talk about the options, from whitening and bonding to Invisalign.
Do You Treat Dental Emergencies?
If you’re in pain or have broken a tooth, tell us as soon as you call, and we’ll do what we can to see you promptly. Our blog explains what to do in a dental emergency. If you have facial swelling that is spreading, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or you feel very unwell, seek urgent medical help immediately through NHS 111 or 999.
