Implant Retained Dentures

What are Implant Retained Dentures?

Dentures are removable replacement teeth. Loose and uncomfortable dentures can have an impact on the quality of life for denture-wearers. Fixed, stable teeth can improve confidence, chewing ability and speech. At Summertown Dental & Implants in Oxford, we have years of experience ‘fixing’ dentures so that these problems do not occur.

Implant retained dentures use a small number of implants to allow dentures to be fixed in place with supports. Two or three implants placed in each jaw can provide stability for part or even a full set of dentures, helping to improve chewing function, reduce shrinkage of underlying bone and gum, and avoid the risk of the dentures moving or dropping while you speak.

Why use implants to stabalise dentures?

  • Stabilising uncomfortable, slipping dentures improves oral function when speaking and eating, enhances appearance, increases confidence and provides greater comfort. Denture stabilisation also prevents bone loss, which impacts not only your oral function but also your facial structure and expression.
  • As the dentures are still removable they’re as easy to maintain. However, because they’re supported by implants, there’s no need for the denture to cover the roof of your mouth, so you can taste food better, your speech is less affected and you avoid the gag reflex common with dentures.
  • In some cases a lower denture may only need two implants to give a totally life-changing transformation to your ability to chew food and smile and laugh with confidence. Requiring minimal surgery, in some cases your current denture can be attached to these immediately. It is amazing for us to see the transformation we can produce for our denture-wearing patients in a relatively short time.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of treatment will vary, depending on how many implants you’re having and the complexity of the treatment. Your dentist will be able to give you a good indication of the cost once you’ve come in for a consultation and your suggested individual treatment plan has been worked out.

It’s worth noting that because implants are a long-term solution with many benefits, they tend to cost more than other options for replacing teeth, and correspondingly the benefits are likely to last a lot longer.
